We made it to Edinburgh while two people who weren’t rich could still walk around their hotel room. Love your photos, especially of things we missed.

Thank you, Rona. What year was that? We thought Switzerland was steep (both the Bernese Alps and hotels). The Sterling pound conversion was startling. Kim initially said, "just double everything" but by the end of day one, we stopped doing that math! On our last night in Inverness we stayed on a canal boat. I felt like a Matryoshka doll as our rooms were getting progressively smaller!

Probably 2005 or 2006. We couldn't afford it now, as we'd rather stay home in comfort than rough it in a poky hotel room. Austria, where we traveled last fall, is much more affordable.

I was there in the summer of 1970 when I was in college and again in the fall of 1972 - a lifetime ago. Didn’t have much money to spend back then but enough to see an do a fair number of “must see’s” and “do’s”. Loved the people and the book shops. And if course McEwan’s ale - before Carlsberg bought them. Thank you for the wonderful piece and photos!

1972! That is a lifetime ago for me (born in 1974). Twenty years ago a friend of mine won a Carlsberg sponsored contest at a bar. The prize was a trip to Denmark and her then-boyfriend was terrified to fly. I was first on the waitlist but no subs were allowed. She went solo! Bookshops and McEwans ales sounds like the perfect itinerary. Pulp and pints! Thanks for following along, Jay!

That is indeed the ‘One Day’ spot!

I love Edinburgh, can’t wait to get back there in August for the comedy festival! 🥰

You should see the hotel prices then! 😉

Glad you had a fab time! 👏😘

Lucky you! I can just imagine the fever pitch then! I'm sure you've heard of The Witchery by the Castle. I love this Sunday Times review: "Outrageously gothic … this is a fabulous, shamelessly camp temple of too-muchness." It's £1,495.00 for one night in the Armory which is described as a "spacious suite with a double four poster bed, ensuite bathroom with bateau bath, a dramatic salon and courtyard views." Did you catch that bateau bath bit?? The price includes a bottle of champagne and a hair dryer! It also has a seating area which our hostel definitely didn't have (unless you include the toilet). https://www.thewitchery.com/

I wonder how long the bateau bath takes to run? Sounds dreamy! 🥰

One year we haemorrhaged £1,200 for 2 nights in a double room at the Hotel du Vin during festival, the room was so small Mr.D's bedside table was actually a shelf above him, otherwise we couldn't have opened the wardrobe! 😂 #wortheverypenny

I just snooped the rooms at Hotel du Vin (compact chic!). Small rooms are great training for overseas economy flights! Where are you spending your pennies/pounds this fest season?

There are four of us going, and I've managed to find a flat that claims to be a 3-bed, but actually it looks like it used to be a 2-bed flat, and one of the bedrooms has been split into 2... which suits us perfectly as we are one couple and two singles. It's almost too good to be true... you'll find out by the end of August whether it is or not. 😉 😂

Just off the Grassmarket, so lovely location! 🤞🤞
