Hi Jules! We talked about this in Peru, but I’ll add to the convo : Thompson Twins w my brother at the Hollywood Bowl. 1984 or so. Huge splurge to get the tix. I was 14 or 15. Still a clear memory of how exciting it was.
Most recent was Pink at Petco Park (San Diego) 2025. Extraordinary!
Now that I’m more of a podcast/audiobook listener, music has taken a back seat. So I appreciate the 80’s music like you! Humming to The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” in São Paulo,Brazil felt so comforting in a land in which Portuguese was so hard to grasp!
Also: shout out to Kim. I loved Yaz in high school. My gymnastics coach would blast it, and if I ever hear it now, I’m back to my 15 year old self attempting back hand springs.
Oh to crack off a back hand spring! I am always so impressed by anyone who can do that! There's always some celery stalk of a kid at the nearby beach who spends the entire time gymnastic-ing. Now I might hear Yaz under your influence!
Yes, I remember your Thompson Twins brag! And your affection for Taylor Swift's business model.
Sending this one out to you, Veronica! DOLLY's cover of "Every Breath You Take": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK6ExoxDIpU Were you humming that song during your diving expedition??
I think my very first concert was The Irish Rovers with my family but my own first big event was Tom Cochrane with, unbelievably, Bryan Adams, as a warm up! This was up in northern Alberta in the very early 80's and I was thrilled to see both of them much later the first year I moved to California. I got to see Tom do a great performance in a small venue, some very cool bar, and Bryan was, of course, in a huge venue. (Look at me calling them Tom and Bryan like the good Canadian I am, as if we are on a first name basis🤣)
"My head is like a football, I think I'm gonna die..."
I'll have that song in my head for the next 72 hours I'm sure! We saw Tom Cochrane (on TV) on Canada Day (I'll see your Canadiana and raise you that!), he's still riding the highway--with Amanda Marshall and Mitsou. They were both on the bill (in Ottawa).
I must admit, I'm a bigger fan of Bryan Adams photography...I'll probably lose two good Canadian points there. I had better eat a Tim's maple dip this week.
First concert was Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens. I didn't like them (and still don') Last concert was Burton Cummings at Casino Rama. To add, my favourite concert venue is Massey Hall 🎶
Yes, Massey Hall is the very best of the lot, isn't it? When Maple Leaf Gardens was under construction to become a Loblaws, my friend Andie and I asked if we could take a brick. We were walking home from some bar on Church and then suddenly found ourselves walking with bricks. I'd be crossing the road if I saw chicks with bricks at 2 a.m.!
My first concert was Wishbone Ash, probably 1974. The best live show, ever, that I saw was Alannah Myles at the Tonawanda NY Canal Fest in 1999. She was in top form back then, and everyone was dancing and singing along. They raffled off an autographed guitar and a chance to meet Alannah backstage. I was devastated when I didn’t win. I’ve heard she’s had hard times with her health, but I have all her albums and she’s still my favorite singer of all time.
First concert Bruce Springsteen CNE grandstand. I was 15 and I was certain I was going to marry him after that show 🤣 I also made it from the back to the front row by saying “excuse me, I’m a doctor” and I couldn’t believe how people quickly moved aside and made room. Ha! Teenage Monster I was. :)

Omg this Dolly cover of Every Breath You Take is gold!!
I'm adding this one to my Brenley Cover Songs wish list...

Thanks for sharing your concert stubs, Donna!
I hear you about Bryan Adam’s photography. I appreciate that he expanded his art form.
Enjoy your Timmie’s Jules🍁
I honestly think my first concert was seeing Victor Borge with my DAD. Virtuoso pianist doing sit-down comedy at the piano.
After that, I think Trooper and BTO, 1977-ish.
Split Enz, 1979 ish.
I was 5 in 1979ish so I had to look up your Split Enz (and Victor Borge). That is a parallel combo of diversity, Beth!

Fun fact: Last time we were at YYZ we had Rush Golden Ales. They did a collaboration with Henderson Brewing: https://shophendersonbrewing.com/products/rush-canadian-golden-ale?srsltid=AfmBOooB_k54Fc8sqcJ_A8RrkTGKwP1kL0Gnot_U4zVUi-RFoxWMqxlz.
